Choosing a protein powder isn't always straightforward. With so many options available, understanding the differences between animal- and plant-based proteins can help you find the option that best suits your lifestyle, dietary preferences and nutritional goals.
Two of the most popular choices are whey protein and pea protein isolate. While both can help increase your daily protein intake, they differ in their source, environmental impact and suitability for different individuals.
Whey protein is derived from cow's milk during the cheese-making process. Once the curds are separated, the remaining liquid whey is filtered and concentrated before being dried into a protein powder.
Depending on the level of processing, whey protein products may contain varying amounts of lactose, fat and carbohydrates.
Pea protein isolate is produced from European golden peas (Pisum sativum) using a gentle water-based extraction process. During production, the protein is separated from the starch and fibre before being dried into a fine powder.
The result is a highly concentrated source of plant protein that is suitable for vegan and vegetarian diets.
One of the biggest differences between plant and animal proteins is their environmental footprint.
Producing plant proteins generally requires fewer natural resources than animal proteins, including less land and lower greenhouse gas emissions [1]. As legumes, peas also naturally contribute nitrogen back into the soil, helping reduce the need for synthetic fertilisers.
For those looking to make more environmentally conscious food choices, plant proteins offer a practical alternative.
Protein is made up of amino acids, nine of which are considered essential because they must be obtained through the diet.
Both whey protein and pea protein isolate provide essential amino acids that contribute to meeting daily protein requirements.
The amount and proportion of individual amino acids varies between different protein sources. For example, whey protein naturally contains relatively high amounts of leucine, while plant proteins each have their own unique amino acid profile.
Clean Lean Protein contains all nine essential amino acids and provides a high-quality source of plant protein. Like many plant proteins, pea protein naturally contains lower amounts of the essential amino acid methionine than some animal protein sources. However, research has shown that pea protein isolate can effectively support muscle maintenance and recovery when consumed as part of a balanced diet that provides adequate total daily protein [2].
Ultimately, meeting your overall daily protein needs is more important than whether your protein comes from plants or dairy.
Not all protein powders are created equal.
Some products contain added sugars, gums, fillers or artificial ingredients to improve flavour or texture.
Clean Lean Protein is made with a short ingredient list and contains no artificial colours, flavours or preservatives. Each serving provides approximately 20–21 g of protein, is naturally low in fat and contains no added sugars.
Digestibility is another important consideration when choosing a protein powder.
Clean Lean Protein is a highly digestible source of plant protein, making it a practical option for everyday use [3].
While many people tolerate whey protein well, individuals who are sensitive to dairy or lactose may prefer a plant-based alternative.
For many people, choosing a protein powder comes down to personal preference and dietary requirements.
Clean Lean Protein is suitable for vegan and vegetarian diets and is free from dairy, gluten and soy.
Whey protein remains a suitable option for people who consume dairy and tolerate it well.
Both can play a role in supporting daily protein intake—it simply depends on your individual needs and preferences.
There isn't a single "best" protein powder for everyone.
If you consume dairy and enjoy whey protein, it can be an effective way to increase your daily protein intake.
If you're looking for a plant-based alternative that's highly digestible, made with minimal ingredients and suitable for vegan diets, pea protein isolate is an excellent choice.
Whichever protein you choose, look beyond the protein content alone. Ingredient quality, digestibility, taste and how consistently you'll use the product are all important considerations.
We are often asked why we chose pea protein for Clean Lean Protein.
When developing our protein, we wanted to create a product that was simple, high quality and suitable for as many people as possible.
European golden peas offered exactly that.
They provide a naturally rich source of plant protein, require fewer environmental resources than many animal protein sources, and can be processed using a gentle water-based extraction method to produce a highly concentrated protein isolate.
The result is a versatile protein that's easy to incorporate into smoothies, oats, baking and everyday meals.
