How Sustainable is Clean Lean Protein?

At Nuzest, we are guided by the three P's: People, Planet, and Products. We are continuously looking for ways to protect our planet. That's why we choose considerate and sustainable practices to treat the planet how we treat ourselves.
Our product Clean Lean Protein, is made from the highest-quality European golden peas.
Peas are classified as a sustainable crop.
They use less land and water than other protein alternatives and put nutrients back into the soil. They have a unique ability to “fix” nitrogen (necessary for protein synthesis) from the air thanks to the symbiotic relationships with the nitrogen-fixing bacteria colonising the plant roots.
The peas we use are carefully selected and grown in northern France, an area known for its quality soils, clean environment, and sustainable practices. They are then transported by waterways to Belgium (further reducing the carbon footprint and environmental impact), where they are processed into Pisane by a private family business, which is renowned for its low carbon footprint and 100% sustainable processing facility.
A typical pea protein isolation process involves high temperatures and chemicals that can destroy the nutrient profile of the peas and denature the protein. Our processing does not use any solvents, chemicals, or high temperatures in its isolation process. The nutrients are extracted from the peas in their state-of-the-art facilities via a gentle water-based extraction process. After the isolation process is complete, the water used is purified and recycled, and any waste is turned into biofuel and animal feed.
We transport the Pisane from Belgium to our manufacturers in the UK where we blend it into the delicious product we all know, Clean Lean Protein. We have worked hard to source a manufacturer in the UK to minimise transport distances and support local suppliers.
In terms of packaging, we use HDPE tubs. HDPE is the most environmentally-friendly plastic on the market as it's 100% recyclable and does not give off harmful emissions. Manufacturing HDPE plastics requires only a fraction of the energy used to produce other leading plastics.
Biodegradable plastics and paper still do not have the air and watertight integrity necessary for food protection and 24-month shelf stability. There are many companies researching and attempting to develop sustainable packaging and we are actively following progress.
We are well down the path of looking at ways we can improve our sustainability initiatives whilst also providing a product that meets the high standards we set ourselves in delivering a premium product to our customers.
